Beta-blockers may reduce stroke severity

Investigation in America has shown that Beta-blockers may also protect the brain as well as the heart. The investigation has shown that people who have a stroke are less severely affected if they have been taking Beta-blockers.

The investigators looked at the severity of stroke in 111 patients and among all the medications these patients have been taken only beta blockers were significantly associated with less stroke severity.

Dr Oppenheimer told Reuters health that "perhaps beta blockers could have dual effect" - by both lowering blood pressure and thereby reducing the likelihood of stroke, "and decreasing its severity once it occurs".
