Bone Drug Could Prevent Later Fractures after Hip Fractures

Doctors have discovered that giving the drug Reclast, an osteoporosis drug from Novartis, to patients with hip fractures can prevent later fractures.

Patients who break a hip once are 10 times more likely to suffer a second break there. The study financed by Novartis found that once a year injections can reduce the risk of subsequent fracture by 35%.

The results were so pronunced the study was completed early.

Reclast is currently awaiting approval from the European Union for Osteoporosis.
