According to official records in England and Wales the number of people living to 100 has reached a record high. The statistics show there are now 9000 centurians, a 90 fold increase since 1911.
The reason for this is said to be due to improvements in housing, healthcare, nutrition and sanitation. However experts are saying that this rise will place a greater burden on the health service, as the costs for caring and treating diseases associated with the elderly are also increased.
