Folic Acid supplements 'cut Stroke risk'

According to a large study the outcomes showed taking Folic Acid reduced the risk of stroke by up to 18%. The findings also suggested that the mandatory fortification of flour currently being considered by UK health officials could reduce the death rates from strokes.

The hope of reducing the 110,000 strokes diagnosed each year in the UK are however tempered by warnings that the supplement could worsen heart conditions of those who are vulnerable.

The study showed that the supplement reduced the risk of stroke by an average 18%, with a greater reduction of 29% was seen in those taking the supplement for more than 36 months.

Peter Coleman the deputy director of research for the Stroke Association said "We urge people to consult their doctors before taking any medication with a view to reducing their risk of stroke".
