Protein found may reverse Macular Degeneration

Successful experiments in mice has led to scientists taking a step closer in producing a drug to tackle two of the leading causes of blindness.

The scientists found that activating a specific protein in the eyes prevented blood vessel damage which can cause sight loss. This research has implications for macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy two conditions associated with blood vessel problems. Both of these problems are common with older people, and the mice bred for the research were engineered to mimic the effects of age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

The research is however, still at a very early stage and although it works in principle it does not necessarily mean it will work in humans, or that the drug can be developed without significant side effects.

The discovery of this new protein Robo4 however has also led to excitement for researchers in other fields. The protein could help other conditions including serous infections such as SARS, and also to use the protein prescence on the surface of tumours to help target drugs.
