NICE U-turn allowing use of new drug gives hope to 37,000 arthritis sufferers

Thousands of patients suffering the agony of rheumatoid arthritis will benefit from a new drug following a U-turn by the NHS rationing watchdog.

NICE had initially planned to ban the treatment RoActerma, despite the fact it is prescribed to patients in Scotland as well as those in most other European countries.

But today it has published draft guidance recommending the treatment, bringing hope to the 37,000 sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis who cannot be helped by the drugs available.

Trial data shows that almost half of patients on RoActerma, have virtually no symptoms a year after they started taking the drug.
