Hospital welcomes adjustable beds

Beds that can be adjusted for height and support at the touch of a button are being delivered to Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey.

All 720 adult beds at the hospital will be electronically adjustable after the 540 beds are delivered next week.

A spokesman said they offered improved hygiene because they were easier to clean, and were adjusted remotely.

And the beds would help staff avoid back injuries by allowing people to work at a comfortable height.

Director of nursing, Mary Dunne, said the acquisition was "a huge stride forward in comfort and safety for patients and staff".

Heavier patients

Some of the beds can be lowered to floor level to protect confused patients who risk injury by trying to climb out unaided, she said.

The beds can take patients weighing up to 29 stone (248kg), and for heavier patients there are two beds which are wider and stronger.

The 540 beds have been replaced at a cost of £762,000.

Old equipment is being offered to other hospitals and charities, and sold at hospital auctions. Old mattresses are being given to the African Prisons Project.
