Vitamin A Drug "could save eyesight"

Fenretinide a drug derived from Vitamin has been found to halt the deterioration of eyesight by protecting healthy cells.

Currently the disease Advanced Macular Degeneration has no cure, however Researchers have found that the drug Fenretinide can help stop “dry” AMD. Dry AMD is caused by the destruction of cells in macula, the part of the retina which allows you to see straight ahead. As part of the study into Fenretinide, 250 people with Dry AMD were given the drug which was found to protect the heathy cells and so prevent deterioration of the eyesight; although it would not stop the destruction of cells that were already damaged.

Further trials are now underway and should they prove to be successful the drug could be available within 5 years.
