It is hoped that new research into brain memory may help unlock
treatments for memory disorders in old age, including Alzheimer's.
Experts have pinpointed a part of the brain that seems to hold
the key to recognising places we have been to before. The mice used
in the study were genetically altered to interfere with brain cells
in this area of the brain known as the dentate gyrus. After the
mice had been altered they became confused and disorientated.
Although the studies have revealed more about the parts of the
brain involved in memory it is still a long way from developing
a treatment for use in humans to help combat the problems in this
particularly area of the brain.
