A new generation of drugs, MabThera, Tocilizumab and Orencia could
revolutionise the treatment of people suffering with rheumatoid
arthritis. Reseach in Austria showed the drugs reduced symptoms
and slowed progression of the disease.
The drugs work by targeting the immune system but do have side
effects, and although two of the drugs are licensed for use NHS
advisers have yet to give doctors the green light to prescribe.
The three drugs do show a lot of promise as each drug diminishes
signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and improve physical
function and health status and retard progression of joint damage.
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellance, which
issues guidelines on which medicines should be available on the
NHS is currently looking at the use of MabThera and Orencia for
treating rheumatoid arthritis.
