A study into diabetes drugs has found that those suffering from
diabetes type 2 are prone to the artery walls thickening when taking
the drug glimepiride. The study showed that the artery thickness
rose by .012 mm after 72 weeks on the drug, however over the same
period users of the new diabetic drug pioglitazone saw the artery
thickness drop by .001 mm.
Thickening of the arteries is a general precursor to heart attacks
and those with type 2 diabetes are at a greater risk of this buildup.
The drug pioglitazone also significantly boosted levels of high
density lipoprotein, or HDL, a beneficial type of cholestral in
the blood.
