Investigations by scientists in Barcelona have found that a regular
drink may halve your risk of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis.
The research presented at the annual European Congress of Rheumatology
on Friday showed drinking at least three units of alcohol a week
had clear protective effects and 10 units bought even more protection.
Other studies have shown that alcohol may also have a beneficial
role in heart disease, stroke and some forms of cancer and possible
even Alzheimers.
Although much more work is needed, Henrik Kallberg of the Karolinska
Insitute in Stockholm said it was likely that alcohol suppressed
the immune system and damped down the inflammatory process behind
the condition.
The findings have been said to be "very interesting"
but excessive drinking in itself can lead to a number of other medical
conditions.
