A trial is about to start in Russia which will help determine
if insulin producing Pig Islet cells can help transform the lives
of patients with Type 1 diabetes. The procedure would involve implanting
the cells into the abdomen of the patient and the islet cells should
start to produce insulin in response to the bodys demands. This
control is lacking in someone with Type 1 diabetes.
The use of pig islet cells has been trialed before with unsuccessful
results, but this new trial will use a different method, which it
is hoped will see better results. Due to this chequered past the
new trial has a cautious welcome.
