A clinical trial has shown that a technique called Ablation, which
is used to treat irregular heart beats was substantially more effective
than anti-arrhythmic drugs.
The technique involves doctors inserting a catheter or a thin,
flexible tube into the heart. A special machine then delivers energy
through the catheter to areas of the heart muscle that causes the
abnormality and disconnects the pathway.
In the 12 month trial, 112 patients had a 75 % success rate in
preventing irregular heart beats were they had previously failed
at least one drug regimen, compared with just 6% success in patients
who only received drug thereapy.
