Australian researchers have reported that starting rehabilitation
within 24 hours after a person has a stroke appears to be safe and
beneficial.
High quality trials to examine this have suprisingly never been
tested before as people always believed that patients could not
participate in early exercise therapy so soon after a stroke or
that it might not be safe.
Although the difference in death or serious adverse events was
no marked difference between the test cases and the normal rates,
the early rehab group were more likely to have good outcomes at
the one year mark.
Now the safety and feasibility has been shown by the Australian
team led by Dr Julie Bernhadt a larger trial of over 2000 patients
has now started.
