A report in the Journal of the American Medical Association details
how the risks of colonoscopy appear to outweigh the benefits. Even
if cancer is identified patients in their 80's or 90's are more
likely to die of other causes.
The article goes on to state that there are currently no guidelines
as to what age colorectal cancer screening should be stopped. The
doctors involved should consider the risk and cost of the screening
and whether it would be justified with the potential benefits in
elderly patients.
