It has been suggested by experts that reform is needed to ensure
the UK copes with the burgeoning care demands of the growing numbers
of elderly people.
It is estimated by 2025 the number of over 85's will have risen
by two thirds. This having the effect of an increasing demand on
health and social services. Professor Ian Philip, the national director
for older people, mentioned that better management of long-term
conditions to reduce the need for hospital or residential care.
The over 65's are the biggest users of the NHS accounting for over
40% of the services budget, with 65% of hospital beds occupied by
the over 65's on any given day. It is suggested that more services
need to be offered from local settings and in peoples own homes.
Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, welcomed any move
to put the needs and wishes of older people at the centre of their
health care.
