A recent study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found
that using two methods of both Mental stimulation and drug treatment
could help people with degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimers.
During the study scientists found mice with a similar condition
were able to regain memories of tasks they had previously been taught.
The mice used in the study were placed in a more stimulating environment
with toys, treadmills and other mice. These mice were then able
to remember a previous test far better than those placed into a
simple cage. Then, when treated with a class of drug called 'histone
deacetylase' or HDAC. These further improved memory and learning
similar to improvements made by environment stimulation.
Although most treatments for Alzheimers targeted the diseases early
stages, this research showed that even after major brain damage
it was still possible to improve learning and memory.
