Staying comfortable and independent at home

Staying Independent in Hyde: Comfort for Today, Support for Tomorrow

Staying Independent in Hyde: Comfort for Today, Support for Tomorrow

After moving just three-quarters of a mile from their previous home into their retirement flat in Hyde,  Mrs Gillian and Mr Lawrance Tabenor wanted to simplify life — no more garden maintenance, everything within walking distance, and a supportive community around them.

They remain active in Hubert Lodge— involved in their local church, attending events, travelling by bus in the summer — but like many in their late 70s and early 80s, they’re aware that energy levels and mobility aren’t what they once were.

The Challenge: Slowing Down Without Giving Up Freedom

Mr and Mrs Tabenor didn’t need help getting up from a chair yet. But they could feel change coming.  “Well, I suppose you worry that you won’t be able to keep mobile… not as mobile as I was 20 years ago. But as long as we can keep moving about, that’s fine.”  They said.

Their previous chairs were:

  • Lower to the ground

  • Less supportive for the head and neck

  • Less comfortable for extended sitting

  • Not designed with future mobility needs in mind

When they decided to order two Kensington riser recliner chairs from us, this wasn’t a emergency purchase. It was a thoughtful one.

Discovering Comfort Plus

When Comfort Plus held a demonstration in their development lounge, they went along simply to “have a look.”

“Didn’t intend to buy anything… but let’s go and see.” They thought and said before joining our event in Hubert Lodge.

What stood out wasn’t just our premium riser recliner chairs — it was the approach.

“They didn’t really push it… they said what they did and what they didn’t do, but it was entirely up to us.”

The Solution: Riser Recliners Designed to Grow With You

Their choice of the supportive Kensington riser recliner chair offers:

  • Higher seat height for easier standing

  • Head and neck support

  • Adjustable recline for relaxation

  • Rise-and-tilt function for future use

“At the moment, we’re okay… we never use the bit to get you up. But the time will probably come.”

That quiet reassurance — knowing the support is there when needed — brings confidence.

The Result: Rest, Relaxation and Reassurance

Now, daily life feels easier.

“It’s nice. I sit here and I quite often doze off… it’s quite relaxing.”

They enjoy:

  • Comfortable afternoons without stiffness

  • Improved posture and support

  • Stylish seating that visitors compliment

  • Peace of mind for the years ahead

“They’re much more comfortable… and people always comment. They look nice.”

Even their daughters approve — proof that Comfort Plus furniture blends beautifully into modern retirement living.

Freedom, Even as Life Slows Down

For many couples in their late 70s and 80s, Comfort Plus is about accepting change without surrendering independence.

It’s not about giving up.

It’s about preparing wisely.

This couple didn’t buy because they had to.

They bought because they want to continue enjoying life — comfortably, confidently, and on their own terms.
