Welcome back to our mini-series on the most common medical concerns facing people over the age of 65. This week, we are focusing on a serious but often preventable condition: strokes.
At Comfort Plus, we know how life-changing a stroke can be, both for the individual and their family. The good news is that by understanding the risks and early signs, you can take steps to protect your independence and stay safer at home.
What Is a Stroke?
A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted. This can be caused by a blockage (known as an ischaemic stroke) or by bleeding in the brain (known as a haemorrhagic stroke). Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells start to die, leading to symptoms like sudden weakness, speech difficulties, or confusion.
Why Does Age Increase Stroke Risk?
As we get older, the risk factors that contribute to strokes become more common, including:
High blood pressure
Diabetes
High cholesterol
Atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)
Narrowing of the arteries
These conditions can damage blood vessels over time, making a stroke more likely. That is why it is important to stay proactive about your health.
Can You Reduce Your Risk?
While not all strokes can be prevented, there is a lot you can do to lower your risk:
Manage your blood pressure – regular checks can help you spot problems early.
Eat a healthy, balanced diet – aim for plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
Stay active – even short daily walks or chair exercises can help.
Limit alcohol and stop smoking – both can damage your arteries.
Manage stress – chronic stress can raise blood pressure.
Know the signs of a stroke – FAST: Face: drooping on one side Arms: weakness or numbness Speech: slurred or confused speech Time: call 999 immediately
Living Well After a Stroke
Recovering from a stroke can be challenging, but the right support can make all the difference.
Take rehabilitation seriously – follow the exercises and advice from your healthcare team.
Make your home safe and accessible – remove tripping hazards and consider using supportive furniture.
Stay positive – progress can take time, but every small step forward is worth celebrating.
At Comfort Plus, we understand that simple daily tasks like standing and sitting can become harder after a stroke. Our riser recliner chairs and adjustable beds are designed to help you stay independent and regain your confidence at home.
Next Time…
In our next edition, we will look at hip replacements, why they are common over 65, what to expect after surgery, and how to recover safely and comfortably.
Until then, take care of yourself and stay aware of the signs of a stroke.
